To give this writer some credit, maybe that was the point - take a formulaic ghost story to play on your expectations and then give it a good shake at the end. That is right up my alley. What could be less threatening than a little girl? The film just didn't surprise me. So why is it so annoying?. I think they overused the noise induced jump scare tactic to the point where I wanted to turn off the film.
Some dude dies, leaves a house to a family member. What a thrilling, mysterious movie. Good horror doesn't need such cheap manipulation of the audience. Good writing, quality production, properly developing plot, and well-acted scenes create enough suspense on their own, so that jump-scares only detract from the effect, and insults the audience. I---and I guess many others---stopped falling for that cheap trick after the first movie that used it on me. It annoyed me even more the second time I watched it until I saw the end that I missed the first time. If you like these movies and start getting bored watching it, go ahead and finish it because the end might save it for you. If you're looking for something original and groundbreaking, keep looking. I was rapt until the very end.
The scenery was breathtaking I would have cut the part with the mirror. It is a beautifully shot movie, in Norway presumably, and the bright, white shots are a nice change from a lot of the darker entries in this genre. If you want an intellectual thriller, this film is superbly apt. Family member goes to sell it quickly, gets weirded out while staying there. No jump scare tactics, just scary storytelling with a great twist in the end. It is definitely a slow burn, psychological thriller, with very little gore and no nekkidness that I can recall. I'm just a bit confused, though, about the very last scene. It's almost a one character movie as there is not a lot of dialogue, which shows the light touch of the director.
Then a plot twist at end that people smarter than me probably figured out before the reveal. So well done, very understated, as was the music. If you're looking for jumps and chills, this is your movie. Like, is she going to turn psychotic like her mom and grandma? This is how all horror movies should be made. Unfortunately, nothing really happens until the end.

Does anyone else think that this film is also a metaphor for the abortion Cathrine wants? Also not an over-abundance of nauseating music scores. Some new release movies become unavailable for downloading for a limited time due to licensing restrictions. The winter scenery is gorgeous and actors are quality. That was probably the creepiest part in the whole movie. Third time around, I appreciated it much more, but it is still a bit of a cookie cutter entry in this genre. Fortunately, Haunted uses the jump-scares sparingly, so that it's more compelling and watchable than most of its American counterparts.
It annoyed me so much the first time I watched it, however, that I entirely missed the ending. Was Catherine hallucinating the child she lost while Marcus played with the new baby in the other room?
